Transferable skills
(Your secret weapon!)

21 July 2025

Ever eyed off a job opportunity and thought, “That sounds amazing, but I’m probably not qualified?”

Yep. Me too. Many times.

When I was ready to move on from a previous job, I thought my prospects were pretty slim. It actually took a client (bless her!) to remind me of something huge…that I had a boatload of transferable skills and that I was more than capable of going for that dream role. So, I did.

And guess what?
I landed the job, I travelled, I met amazing people, and I picked up even more transferable skills that helped me step into the next opportunity with confidence.

🚨 PSA for All the Women Reading This

Studies show women tend to only apply for jobs when they meet 100% of the listed requirements.
Men? They’ll shoot their shot at 60%.

Why the gap?
Because women are often conditioned to “prove themselves” and carry the invisible mental load of family, home, and career, leaving little room for bold leaps or self-celebration.

But here’s the truth:
You already have what it takes. You’re just not calling it what it is.

💼 So…What Are Transferable Skills?

Transferable skills are your career chameleons. The qualities and abilities you can carry with you from one role to another, no matter the industry.

They’re not about titles.
They’re about value.
And you’ve got plenty.

These are the everyday superpowers you might be overlooking:

  • ✨ Communication
  • 🧩 Problem-solving
  • 🧠 Critical thinking
  • ⏰ Time management
  • 💪 Leadership
  • 🌪️ Adaptability
  • 🤝 Teamwork

Honestly? That’s just the start.
You want multitasking? Try managing a toddler while on a Zoom call, defusing a sibling squabble, and cooking dinner with one hand. Welcome to the Olympics of transferable skills.

👩‍💼 Real Life Examples (a.k.a. You Totally Have These Already)

Let’s say you’re working in customer service. You talk to people all day, resolve problems, and keep your cool under pressure (even with the customer who insists their password is “password123”).

That’s:
✅ Strong communication
✅ Conflict resolution
✅ Patience of a saint
✅ Emotional intelligence
✅ Problem-solving
✅ Multi-tasking ninja status

That experience is gold in roles like project coordination, HR, sales, admin, education, honestly, the list goes on.

Now, maybe you’re in a technical job. You’ve got analytical thinking, attention to detail, the ability to learn quickly. Whether it’s data, digital, finance, logistics, or even healthcare you’ve built a rock-solid base.

🧭 Why Transferable Skills Matter

These skills give you freedom.
Freedom to pivot. To switch careers. To leap before you’re “100% ready.”

If you’re feeling stuck, bored, or uninspired in your current role your transferable skills are what will help you break out of the box and into something new.
Something better.

✅ So, What Should You Do With This Info?

Here’s your next move:

1. Stop selling yourself short.

2. Update your resume with examples of transferable skills in action.

3. Apply for the job. Even if you don’t tick every box. Even if it feels a bit scary. Do it anyway.

4. Practice explaining how your past experience makes you the perfect fit, even if it’s from a different field.

💬 Final Thought: You’re Not Starting From Scratch

You’re building on a foundation. And that foundation is damn strong.

Your experience matters.
Your skills matter.
YOU matter.

So go on, dust off that resume, write the application, and don’t wait to be “ready.”

Just like Bon Jovi sang – Woaaah, You’re halfway there!
