Navigating career change
(Like a boss!)

21 July 2025

The way we work has changed a lot over the years.

There was a time when you were expected to pick one employer, one path, and ride it all the way through to retirement, loyal, dependable, and probably bored out of your mind.

Thankfully, those days are behind us.

These days, changing jobs (or entire careers) isn’t a red flag, it’s a sign of courage, curiosity, and a refusal to settle for less. Multiple roles on your résumé? That’s not flaky, that’s flexible. It shows that you’ve taken control of your career and made bold moves to find what fits.

Still, navigating career change, whether it’s a full 180 or just a gentle pivot, can feel overwhelming. So if you’re staring down a big shift (or just daydreaming about one), here are some practical and mindset-friendly tips to help you through the mayhem.

🎯 1. Get Clear on What You Actually Want

Before you jump ship, take a moment.

What do you really want from your work life? Are you craving more flexibility? More creativity? More money? (Fair.)

Do a little soul-searching:

  • Where would you like to be in five years?
  • What are your strengths and your “not-this-again” tasks?
  • Is there something you’d love to turn into a career?

Try a career quiz or chat to a career coach if you’re stuck. Sometimes an outside perspective is the spark you need.

🕵️‍♀️ 2. Research Like a Detective With Wi-Fi

Once you’ve got a loose idea of where you want to head, start digging.

  • Ask your friends, ex-colleagues, your cousin’s ex, anyone in the know.
  • Read job descriptions, salary guides, and real-life stories.
  • Scroll LinkedIn (without comparing too hard), join forums, and explore.
  • Have a chat with your preferred AI platform. (You might be pleasantly surprised at what they could uncover!)

You’re not just researching a job, you’re scouting a lifestyle. Know what you’re walking into before you leap.

💼 3. Take Stock of What You’ve Got

Even if you’re heading into a brand new field, you’re not starting from scratch, you’re starting from experience.

List your existing skills and strengths:

  • What’s transferable?
  • What’s missing?
  • What can be tweaked, stretched, or upgraded?

Short courses, volunteering, freelancing, or even shadowing someone can help you fill the gaps and test the waters before you dive in.

🗺 4. Make a Plan (That Leaves Room for Chaos)

Now’s the time to sketch a plan. Nothing fancy, just something that breaks your dream into doable steps.

Set realistic goals, give yourself timelines, and most importantly: make peace with the fact that things may not go perfectly.

You might zigzag. You might get rejected. You might cry once or twice. Still worth it.

🧠 5. Expect Your Brain to Freak Out (Briefly)

Change is uncomfortable. Full stop.

Your brain loves routine, even if that routine is slowly draining the life out of you. So yes, you’ll second-guess yourself. You’ll panic-Google “how to undo life choices.”

That’s normal.

You’re not failing, you’re evolving. And those “what have I done” moments? They are often the start of something amazing.

🚀 The Bottom Line

Making a career change can feel like standing at the edge of a cliff holding a parachute you packed yourself.

But here’s the truth:

  • You’re allowed to want more.
  • You’re allowed to change your mind.
  • You’re allowed to grow into someone different.

So if you’re feeling the pull toward something new, lean into it.

Not everything we face can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it’s faced.

And if you trip on the way there? Well, at least it’ll make for a cracking story. 💼🥂
