The muscle and the side hustle
21 July 2025
Cost of living… it’s one of the main problems most of us are facing right now. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never been closer to selling an organ just to afford a trolley full of groceries. And let’s be honest, the prices aren’t slowing down any time soon.
For many, this means working more just to keep the lights on and the fridge vaguely stocked. It’s a huge commitment and a family sacrifice, but sometimes, it’s the only way to stay afloat.
But here’s the kicker: Over 1 million Aussies are now working more than one job. That’s the highest it’s ever been. That’s a lot of people moonlighting just to make ends meet. And while stacking shelves at midnight or joining a medical trial for “science” might technically pay the bills, it’s probably not how you imagined your life unfolding.
Use AI to brainstorm. Seriously, ask your favourite chatbot a few questions. It might help you shape your idea or refine your niche. Look for free support. One of my favourite resources is Global Sisters – a goldmine of free courses, coaching, and community for women starting businesses. Whether you’re dreaming it up or scaling it big, they’ve got your back.
Hey, you’ve already survived toddlers, tantrums, and the terrifying world of lunchbox prep. You’ve got grit. You’ve got heart. And with a little bit of hustle, you’ve got a shot at creating something pretty damn special. Now go flex that muscle and start that hustle. It could be the beginning of something life changing!
✨ Let’s be real for a sec…
Working parents are already juggling flaming swords. School drop-offs, daycare drama, forgotten library books, workplace chaos, and a never ending washing situation that’s starting to feel personal. So, the idea of adding another job? Sounds about as appealing as stepping on LEGO barefoot. But here’s the kicker: Over 1 million Aussies are now working more than one job. That’s the highest it’s ever been. That’s a lot of people moonlighting just to make ends meet. That’s where the magic of the side hustle comes in
What if, instead of burning out doing something soul-sucking, you started something meaningful? Something that fits around the chaos, not adds to it. A little project that sparks joy (no offence, Marie Kondo), challenges you in a good way, and maybe, just maybe, leads to something bigger. It won’t fix everything overnight, but it might just be the first step toward something brighter…and something that’s all yours. But where do you even start?
It’s easy to spiral into panic just thinking about starting a side hustle. But remember, you don’t have to leap up the whole staircase. Just take the first step. Got a passion or dream? Something you’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t find the time (or energy) for? Start there. See a gap in the market? A problem that keeps popping up or something people always ask you about? There could be something there. Do your research. See if similar businesses already exist. If they do, great. Learn from them. If they don’t, you might be onto something unique.Use AI to brainstorm. 💡 And finally… Start before you’re ready
There’ll never be the perfect time. Your inbox will always be full. The kids will always be hungry (again). Your to-do list will still be a mile long. But your idea? It deserves a chance. You don’t have to quit your job, but if you can build it up slowly, it could be the opportunity to be able to quit your job in the not too distant future! Even this blog started with an idea and a few words on a page! So start messy. Start unsure. Start tired and overwhelmed and juggling 42 other things. Because taking the first small step, even if it’s writing down your idea or chatting with a friend, is better than waiting for everything to align perfectly (spoiler alert: it won’t).Hey, you’ve already survived toddlers, tantrums, and the terrifying world of lunchbox prep.
